Footy fans are struggling to re-focus on the NRL competition after Queensland’s convincing 22-6 victory in the State of Origin decider left the Maroon army in rapture and Blues’ supporters reeling.
Now the NRL sets its sails for the finals.
There are six NRL matches this weekend – Canterbury, Melbourne, Parramatta and the Roosters have byes – to be followed by seven full rounds before the final series.
Parramatta , in eighth place on 22 points, have opened up a substantial four point gap but there are six teams from ninth to fourteenth within six points of the top eight and still in contention if they can string wins together.
This weekend the Dragons and Broncos have already lost (Frizell) or rested (Gillett and Maguire) Origin players and Wednesday’s mental and physical exhaustion will no doubt affect the performance of the Sharks (5 Origin players), Titans (3), Cowboys (3), Tigers (2), Newcastle (1) and Manly (1).
Here are my tips (winners in CAPITALS):
- WARRIORS v Panthers
- RAIDERS v Dragons
- Knights v BRONCOS
- TITANS v Sharks
- SEA EAGLES v Tigers
- Rabbitohs v COWBOYS
Last week: 2/4 Total: 89/134
A full round of eight games with two games on Monday – I am tipping more away winners than losers.
Mind you, my winners include both Souths and Canterbury playing “away” at ANZ Stadium against the Tigers and Dragons respectively, and Parramatta playing at “home” in Darwin against the Titans.
Here are my tips (winners in capitals):
BRONCOS v Raiders
Tigers v RABBITOHS
Knights v WARRIORS
Eels v TITANS
Roosters v STORM
Sea Eagles v PANTHERS
Dragons v BULLDOGS
SHARKS v Cowboys
Last week: 4/7
Total: 63/99 Coach says don’t let rain, wind, flood and golden point discourage you. Knuckle down and fight your way though Origin period.
Round 11 includes a trip for the New Zealand Warriors and Canberra Raiders to New Plymouth in Taranaki in the North Island of New Zealand. After recent trips to Wellington, Christchurch and now New Plymouth it’s obvious why the Warriors dropped Auckland from their name some years ago.
Tipsters and Parramatta fans will probably have to wait till Monday to confirm whether Kieran Foran will turn out to improve the Eels’ chances against the Storm. Either way it’s one of the toughest games to predict along with the result of another likely thriller between the Cowboys and Broncos.
Here’s my tips (in capital letters):
RABBITOHS v Dragons
COWBOYS v Broncos
TIGERS v Knights
WARRIORS v Raiders
SHARKS v Manly
PANTHERS v Titans
BULLDOGS v Roosters
Eels v STORM
Last week: 4/8
Total: 51/80 Coach says “Sure, three of them were near things but we have to learn to win the close ones”

There are no Thursday night game as Easter begins. Round 4 has two games on Good Friday, two on Saturday, only one on Sunday but three on Monday.
Here are my tips to win:
Last week: 3 (and a draw) / 8. I say “unlucky”- two games decided by 1 and 2 points. Coach says “Mentally weak. 80 minute game. Own it. Toughen up”
( Total: 15/24 Note: Of 8 incorrect tips so far, 6 were away teams who lost. That has influenced me to tip a chastened Roosters at home to pip the Sea Eagles who have a short turnaround )

Here are my footy tips (winners) for Round Two:
6 out of 8 last week for first round of competition. Coach happy with that.
Best of luck!
It still feels like summer but the winter footy season is here….Super Rugby last weekend, NRL this week and AFL in 3 weeks. Seriously it is too hot but at least there are plenty of night games.
If your office or family has a tipping contest, don’t get caught out by the Thursday night games to start the NRL and AFL.
Here are my tips for Round 1 of the NRL:
WINNERS: Broncos, Sea Eagles, Raiders, Warriors, Cowboys, Rabbitohs, Titans, Storm.
